I hate my ISP. They are all a bunch of incompetent monkeys who don't know $h!t about $h!t.
Well, here's some major nice news for me (and my server).
I knew this was coming, but forgot about it until I received this little advertisement in the mail today.
Very very soon my housing area will have the opportunity to switch over to 100 Mb/s!!!
That makes me nearly wet my pants.
While my current 24 Mb/s line still may be leaps and bounds ahead of most American's, that simply isn't enough for me when I know that other Swedes around me are getting 100 Mb/s.
Hehehehe
I cannot wait. As soon as they give us a definite date, it's "f*ck you, Bredbands Bolaget". My current ISP (Bredbands Bolaget) has a 3 month termination clause in their contract, so the sooner I get the date, the better.
You seriously cannot imagine how frustrating Bredbands Bolaget has been for me. There was a time where they were the best ISP in Sweden (just 5 years ago), but that time has come and passed. They are now, the slimy crap that crap that other crap won't eat. I really despise BBB - a bunch of incompetent morons.
I'm not too happy that the 100 Mb connection is going to be offered through my crummy (overpriced) electronic company, but what can you do?
100 Mb COME SOON!

I think I should make a weekly "yet another annoyance" bit on all the new ways Firefox finds to irritate and disasstisfy me.
Anyhow, I just came across another while posting my last item.
It seems that, with Firefox 3 at least, once you have clicked the "browse" button to upload a file, you can't erase that field, if you don't have anything to upload!
I discovered this when I accidently tried uploading my image as an icon. My software threw the "maximum icon size" error, so I went back to correct it. I could easily use the browse button on the appropriate field to have the file uploaded, but there is no way to remove the selection from the previously selected failure.
In other words, an entire form of contents can be wasted in a split second because you aren't able to erase the path to a file to be uploaded. Previous versions would allow you to select the path and erase it (I believe IE handles this the same). Not anymore! Anytime you click or select the text already stored, the damn browser opens up the dialog box to upload a file. Clicking "Cancel" only cancels out of the current dialog and the previous value remains!
Seriously... I'm just waiting, hoping, and waiting some more for the next great browser to come along. I've never been fully satisfied with Firefox from day 1 - sure, it's still the best bet - and my frustration at the constant hurdles the team keeps throwing in are really a turn off.

If you're like me, then there's probably a game you can remember playing forever-ago, but can't anymore because it was on DOS (or Windows 95 in some cases).
It turns out there is a really good program available, under the name "dosemu". For ubuntu:
sudo apt-get install dosemu
You'll see after launching it that it mounts the Windows "C" directory to ~/.dosemu/drive_c/. So any files you move into this folder for Linux will be accessible from the DOS virtualization.
There are a few games I got to get ahold of now. In particular, I am after Phantasmagoria & Phantasmagoria 2: A puzzle of flesh. If anyone has the retail version of either of these two, perhaps I can buy 'em off you. I may have to check ebay again... Grr...
I've attached a demo of quake to this item - installs and runs in dosemu perfectly.
Remember when they used to have this concept called "share-ware"? Today they call it piracy.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but this website has been down for the past 2 days. I have no frigging clue why it was down, nor do I have a frigging clue why it is working now.
It wasn't site related because even pinging the hostname levlive.com hasn't worked for me the past 2 days. I have no idea if it was DNS related either, because I never touched a damn thing with the DNS prior to it going off.
Restarting the server countless times did nothing, but oddly enough it just started to load for me, even though earlier this morning it wasn't working for me.
*sigh*
Sometimes computers can be really stupid and do things with no seemingly logical reason behind it. Either that or what a computers might see as logical defies human logic. Whatever the case, sometimes computers do downright weird things without being told to. I'm just glad it seems to be fixed now.

I knew Firefox 3.5 did this when I originally downloaded it back on Ubuntu 9.04. Because of this, I stopped using Firefox 3.5 right away and went back to Firefox 3.
Today I went ahead and updated to Ubuntu 9.10, which comes with Firefox 3.5 as default.
Grrr.....
Damn is it f*cking annoying. What gives?!
My guess is it was done out of memory management, since there is no other practical reason for removing it.
I remember when I noticed this when switching from IE 5 to IE 5.5 (or was it IE 5.5 to IE 6?), and damn was it annoying then. Well, it was worse then with IE because Microsoft doesn't let you downgrade to go back.
In any event, it's frustrating and annoying as hell. Did the developers just decide, "hey, GUI cues aren't all that important"?
I know I'm not the only one, because a quick google on "firefox 3.5 hourglass" will return pages with lots of other angry folks.
Maybe it's just me, but they really made a hugely stupid mistake here. Implementing something that is going to make people more frustrated and a lot happier with the browsing experience isn't going to justify performance - if that was why it was removed.
Damn, Mozilla... come on and get this back already!

It's nice to feel my head so light as it is, at least once in a while.
It's a shame not everything can be so good at the moment though. I think my external 500GB hard drive is officially toast. Plus, my PC's power supply is fried.
(mental note: make more icons for this site)

I came across this tool just recently, when I was trying to determine if the 650W power unit I just got was good enough.
Apparently, this tool recommends I have at least a 556 of a generic brand, or 229 for a good brand. Hopefully, Corsair is under the line of what this guy considers "decent".
If you want to get a vague idea of how much power your computer is drawing, check it out:

I'm currently running on a 420W with most my devices detached. I was recently running on a generic 520W, but that is now out of commission. I really hope my new one gets here soon.

I figured it was my power supply that wasn't power enough for all the devices hooked up and I think I was right.
I replaced it with one from my work computer, and the computer would then boot.
However, it wasn't long before it died again. After many reboots it would fail to start and shut down as it was trying to boot up the OS (Linux or Windows). So I opened it up, unplugged one hard drive, and the CD drive (and kept all the extra fans unplugged), and voila.
It works again.
So I guess I need to get a new power supply. I want another 650 Watt one since my 520 didn't do it.
And now I have to get a new SATA hard disc cause I think my 500 GB one is fudrucked. I am unable to create partitions, the partition I have is still corrupt, I can't format the partitions, make delete, modify or make new ones... This really sucks. I've used fdisk on Linux, Partition Magic 8 on Windows and the windows installer and formatting tool. Nothing has helped. Unless my new power supply will somehow magically affect it (since it's only connected through USB via an external storage cabinet), then I'm out another 1000 kronor for the hard disc. I wont be going with Seagate again this time - I've heard good things about them but my only experiences are bad ones. Looks like I'll go for a western digital.

I now have less than a hundred bucks in my bank account now, until the 25th.
I just got a new hard disc, twice the size of my last (1TB), and a 650W power supply. The power supply had the highest review rating and was why I went with it. I wanted the 750W, and probably would have despite its price, but it didn't have as good a rating.
Now I really hope they get here sooooooooooon.

Holy macaroni!
My PC's CPU temp is lingering around 75C now after a fresh boot.
Looks like it's temperature related like I thought. I may not have even needed a new power supply...

My computer wasn't even booting up for the longest time cause it was overheating. I caught the temperature as high as 77C (using both the BIOS and lm-sensors). That was freaky.
I took out the heat sink and used compressed air to clean it out, and then applied artic silver 5. After waiting a good 30 minutes before using it, the CPU temperature now lingers around 35-36C - huge difference from earlier.

I'm glad to see the CPU's temperature running around 35C today. That would have been a booger for me to work if it was still overheating. My computer > work computer.
Now that I got the tracking number for my PSU and HD I'm constantly checking up on where it is. I really hate using this puny 420W one at the moment. According to posten.se, the package is now in Malmo, which means with any luck it will be in Eslov tomorrow.
I only wish the games I ordered not too long ago would come as quickly. I was supposed to take a picture of my gaming collection on this last Friday, because it was a year since last doing it, but I never got around to it. I ordered Turok on 360 from game.co.uk, because I saved a lot that way.
This is going to be a fun week with the mail.

This has been a really horrible day for me. It's finally 11pm and I just now am capable of using my own PC again. I managed to get on for about an hour earlier in the day, and then everything went to hell after that.
All in all, more computer parts are fudrucked and I'm out even more money on replacement parts.
To top things off, I had to reformat AGAIN.
Linux works fine now (although all my data is gone) and Windows is junk... Since I have a new motherboard, I need to install the USB drivers. I can't do that cause I can't use my mouse since it is USB. My motherboard doesn't have a PS2 port for a mouse either. I have NOOOOO frigging clue how I'm expected to solve that one.
I ended up blowing way too much money today, and I am not even happy over having to do these purchases.
Even now, my computer is incredibly problematic.
I will take pics and go into details of all I ended up getting today. You'll be really surprised.
Hopefully, I will just turn on my PC and it will boot, load Linux and everything will be nice. I really hope that is how it goes tomorrow.
Today has been hell.

First things first - I had a doctor visit and in short: "it's not a tuma". That is to say, I had a MRI several months ago and went to see a neorologist for the results yesterday. Fortunately, they see no sign of a tumor in my brain or spinal cord - happy day.
My computer situation wasn't as pleasant. I was happy enough my power unit and hard disc had already arrived so early, so we picked them up. I hooked my computer up to the new power supply and everything was running smoothly. About half an hour later, I realized I needed to hookup the audio to the TV card properly... I went under the desk, attempted to plug a cable from line-out of the TV card to line-in of the audio card, when I started smelling something and the computer died. I have no idea if what I was smelling was for real, or if it was all in my head, but I swore I smelled something burning.
After that, my computer refused to boot up. I tried disconnecting component by component to see which one was causing the problems. Eventually, I realized that the fan wouldn't even spin (for the CPU). Long story short - somehow my motherboard was fried, or out of commission.
Because of these added problems, and because my apparent fatally wounded hard disc evidently still works, I never even got around to testing, or even opening, my 1 TB hard disc.
More on what I had to purchase to get things running again, and the battle with my insubordinate PC shortly...

As it is now, my PC seems to be functional.
I don't want to make any overstatements, because I'm worried about any further problems.
It turns out, my power supply may have never been died to begin with. Well, I have no way of verifying this at the moment, but I have a sneaking suspicion at least. What I do know is my old Conroe Crossfire Asrock board is out of commission.
When I realized the fan wouldn't spin for the CPU I immediately thought:
1) the motherboard is flucked
2) the CPU is flucked
3) the CPU's fan is flucked
I'm not sure if any other problems are related to this one, but I'm pretty sure the problem was motherboard related. Wanna know how? I frigging spent more money on getting another.
Actually, I ended up going to a computer store pretty late in the evening and buying a new motherboard, and a new processor. I'm not one to downgrade hardware, so I once again relinquished my savings and got a Quad Core 2.4 processor. The motherboard was a pretty cheap generic ASUS one that does what I need (I wasn't going overboard here).
I said to myself, "don't open the CPU until you try the old CPU and fan on the new board". I did that, and it turns out my old CPU works just fine on the new board, which implies the problem was either temporary or my old motherboard was the issue.
As it stands now, I haven't even opened the Quad Core CPU, and I am beginning to think I should just take it back now. The fact of the matter is that I don't game on the PC, and the most I ever push my CPU is when compiling large programs from source (which is rare). In other words, I kinda feel like this may be a waste of money.
Plus, I already spent nearly the same price for the TB hard disc, which now seems to be unnecessary as well. I finally managed to completely destory and erase all old partitions on my 500GB drive, and recreated three partitions. From what I see, the hard drive that started all these problems seems to be doing just fine now.
So now I have a Quad Core CPU and a 1 TB hard disc, both unopened and unused. Plus, I have no money, so I really think I ought to take one back... grrrrrrr
